Originally called Muddy Creek Settlement until the river name changed in 1878 from Muddy Creek to Yea River.
The convergence of three main highways from Yarra Glen, Seymour and Benalla/Mansfield, Yea is a popular stopping point for travelers in the area.
Established in 1855 along what was once called Muddy Creek, the town provides accomodation and refreshment from a variety of hotels and establishments, making it an ideal alternative route out of Melbourne when heading north.
The Goulburn Valley Highway (B340) passes through this major town, and meets with Melba Highway (B300). The surrounding areas are a mecca for motorcyclists with some great touring roads in the Mt Slide area to the south, and east towards the High Country out of Mansfield from here.
